大家都知道见到STOP SIGN要停车，而且标准的做法应该是将车停在STOP SIGN停车线的线后。但是关于到底要停多久的问题，却说法不一，有些人说要停3秒，有些人说该停5秒，有些人又说其实停稳了就可以了。
那到底哪种说法才是对的呢？STOP SIGN到底要停多久才是合法而且合适的呢？
其实加州法律对于STOP SIGN要停多久并没有明确的规定，只交代了见到STOP SIGN要完全停住（full and complete stop，是之前交通法的描述。现在的交通法有所更改，将停止程度直接描述为“STOP”）。而对于如何才算“STOP”，加州交通法（CVC 587）则是这样描述的：Stop or stopping… shall mean any cessation of movement of a vehicle，也就是要车子完全不动。所以，只要车子完全停住（车轮不再动，速度降为0）在STOP SIGN线后之后，如果没有其他先行权大于自己的车辆需要避让的话，就可以继续行驶了。
但是，为了安全起见，我们停了STOP SIGN后还应该左右查看一下是否有其他车辆需要让行，而一般我们完成把车完全停住并左右查看这个动作大概需要花费的时间，也就是3秒钟左右。所以3秒钟的这个时长，其实还是具有一定参考意义的。
(a) The driver of any vehicle approaching a stop sign at the entrance to, or within, an intersection shall stop at a limit line, if marked, otherwise before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection.
If there is no limit line or crosswalk, the driver shall stop at the entrance to the intersecting roadway.
(b) The driver of a vehicle approaching a stop sign at a railroad grade crossing shall stop at a limit line, if marked, otherwise before crossing the first track or entrance to the railroad grade crossing.
